I live only 3 minutes from the Leningrad Zoo. Shame to me, rarely go there to draw. Better to do it more often :)
It's very hard to draw alive animals, because they move all the time, thoose you choose nocturnal (owls), lazy (deer) or sleeping animals for the role of models. Of course I try to draw moving animals too, but all I get are just a page full of "two lines" figures.
Another big problem is that Russian Zoos are poor and old fashioned, animals live behind a thick grating :( You can't see body shape of small animals at all.

These are really good. I work in a zoo as a photographer and to draw animals I just take photos :XD: it's easier especially when I have to make some designs for the zoo and I'm in a hurry (second part of my job there is graphic design) but when I have some free time I like to walk around with my sketchbook and draw animals. In our zoo we have less and less cages so luckilly I can see whole animals but true, they move too fast sometimes

Yeah, it's much easy to draw from photos. But one have to practice drawing alive animals too. There is no choice =) And it's more fun too.
