Bleach shinigami outfit by Elruu Bleach shinigami outfit by Elruu
I was once asked to explain how to draw kimono. Well, here it is.
I desided to start from samurai outfit and take Bleach shinigami clothes as the example. (Maybe I'll draw female kimono later.)
Of course it's a very generilised uniform. Search i-net for more types of japanese traditional clothing if you are interested in specifics.

It's the same for girls, except for fundoshi. Fundoshi is traditionally men's underwear (I included them, because we've seen it in the anime), I suppose women wear suteteko.

You can add chest bandaging if you want. Rangiku doesn't bother though.

If the white undershirt has half sewn sleeves like the black gi, why do we only see a glimpse of white under the black instead of skin?
Reply
:iconelruu:
Elruu Featured By Owner Mar 23, 2010
In the anime the sleeves in front isn't sewn either. Easier to draw this way. Also in reality the seem starts very low. Folds cover all skin.

Jisatsu-NYX, the reason Soi Fon doesn't wear a Gi is because she's the Captain of the 2nd Squad, which also branches on to the Covert Ops, i suspecct it has something to do with resticting her movements as she is an assasin and needs to be able to move quickly,

it's only a guess but hey ho, bye :)

I looked up the prices of all the things mentioned in your tutorial and it's turning out that it would be cheaper just to buy the whole costume together. But buying everything separately would ensure better quality.
A whole costume that I found is $82.95 and everything pieced together (scratch the fundoshi-- feel ballin~) would be about $150 + shipping and handling of everything + possible alteration costs.

Do you know of any patterns for the han-juban, gi, and hakama?

By the way, can I ask you to explain a little more the "rolling up and tucking" the long gi part? I quite don't get it... O_o;

it is drawn in the tutorial (rolled up gi)
the lower part of the cloth is rolled and tucked in belt on the back
